Bubi

This time of year always brings memories of Bubi, a wonderful cat I used to share my home with: July 23 is the anniversary of her death, while August 8 is marked as the International Cat Day. I have lots of stories about my cats, past and present, but let me just share a few things about Bubi.

She came into my life as an adopted kitten, sweetest and naughtiest I’d ever seen. For something so small that it could fit in the palm of my hand, she sure could make an awful lot of mess and ruckus! As years went by, she became more mature and ever closer to me, but she never stopped being naughty and mischievous.

Unfortunately, she was also getting progressively ill from an autoimmune disease. In spite of all the treatments and medication, it was like making one step forward, two steps back. By mid-July 2017 things got really bad. She became very weak, barely able to move. Once she completely stopped eating, I knew what had to be done to end the suffering.

On the last day of her life, before I took her for that final trip to the vet, I laid her on a comfy cushion she liked and read to her from one of my favourite childhood books, Priฤe iz davnine (translated into English as โ€œCroatian Tales of Long Agoโ€) by Ivana Brliฤ‡-Maลพuraniฤ‡. I can think of few times in my life when I’d felt so utterly crushed; those magical tales helped bring some comfort and solace.

For days and weeks after she passed, I swear I could hear the sound of Bubi drinking water in the kitchen, as if a part of her stayed behind and took time before the final departure. Years later, I still miss her rubbing her face against my beard, that one black pad on otherwise pink paws (for which I had a special song), the way she would lie across my chest while I was watching TV…

There’s something undeniably special about cats and the relationships they develop with us, and I’m very grateful for the ten years I was lucky to enjoy her company.

  2. It is amazing how cats affect our lives. Bubi was a real beauty. When our cat passed away I could swear I heard her stomping feet. She was a small cat with a heavy walk. Her name was Lynxsie, but we caller her Kitty Cat. The sound of her footsteps has faded. Occasionally, I still see her in her old haunts.
