Listening tips: Walking

Itโ€™s one of the simplest, yet one of the most beneficial forms of exercise. It can be a physical activity, a form of meditation in movement, or a combination of both. Itโ€™s been several years now since I adopted a daily walking routine, and itโ€™s been a real life-changer.

If you havenโ€™t given walking much thought, in this post Iโ€™ll present a few listening tips on the subject. Hopefully they will inspire you to see it with fresh eyes and – if you donโ€™t tend to be very active – motivate you to get a pair of walking shoes and get on the road.

Hosted by Frank Ring, Walking for Health and Fitness is an ongoing podcast series, first launched in May 2023. The available episodes delve into everything from life expectancy and other health benefits of walking to road safety and other issues. Great for beginners!

This podcast is episode 162 of the long-running Eat Move Think series. About 30 minutes long, it contains an interview with Dr. Nelson Ferreira who explains all the mental and physical benefits of walking. The links on the podcast webpage will give you additional information and resources related to the topic.

The title of this podcast refers to a Harvard Medical School study showing how walking for just 21 minutes a day can reduce risk of heart disease by a stunning 30%. Dr. Christine Marschilok explains these and other findings. (Of particular interest to English language learners, thereโ€™s a full transcript of this programme on the Living Well website.)

Produced by The Irish Independent newspaper, this episode of Real Health presents the science behind the obvious mental health benefits of walking. If you were wondering why exactly people feel calmer and more relaxed after spending some time outdoors, tune in to this podcast.

Having recently adopted Nordic Walking as one of my regular activities, I feel obliged to mention Walking on Air, an excellent podcast series specifically aimed at the Nordic Walking Community. Hosted by Mary Fulton, a British Nordic Walking instructor, each episode is a treasure trove of information and solid advice, equally suitable for total beginners and more advanced practitioners.

And if you havenโ€™t got a clue as to what exactly Nordic walking is, or what makes it such an effective form of exercise, listen to this 15-minute episode of Just One Thing with Michael Mosley, produced by the BBC Radio 4. I bet it will convince you to get those Nordic Walking poles and start walking!
