Listening tips: Tea culture

Thereโ€™s nothing like a hot, freshly brewed cup of tea! A beverage so simple, and yet with such a complex and intriguing history, cultural presence, and plenty of health benefits. If youโ€™re a tea lover, I think youโ€™ll enjoy this post; but even if youโ€™re not, youโ€™ll be sure to find lots of interesting information on different aspects of tea culture.

I love the versatility and cultural insightfulness of this podcast series. Hosted by Ken Cohen, Talking Tea will teach you a lot about how tea is made and used in different cultures and spiritual traditions. There are episodes on tea, Zen and Daoism, different tea schools, and culturally-specific types of tea. Want to learn how to make that perfectly soothing cuppa? Formerly known as The TEAmigos Podcast, OpTEAmized focuses on the health benefits of tea. Each episode is on a specific and very practical topic, such as how to build your own tea routine, which tea blends to drink as a remedy for various health problems, or what are the best tea brewing techniques. [Duration: each episode is about an hour long]


While You Were Steeping is a โ€œcuratorial tea and culture podcast.โ€ Join the hosts, Australian tea enthusiasts Hayden Rodgers and Michael Mandalios, in their exploration of tea history (season 1) and reviews of different types of tea (season 2). [Duration: each episode is c. 45 minutes long]


The focus of this podcast series, hosted by William Liu and presented by World Tea Association, is on the cross-cultural aspects of tea. Each episode is a dynamic and interesting conversation with people with very different professional backgroundโ€”from scholars to athletes and activistsโ€” addressing topics as wide as identity, sustainability, mental health, and more. [Duration: from 20 to 60 minutes]


This ten-part series from the BBC Radio 4 explores the imperial past of Britainโ€™s (and Indiaโ€™s!) national drink: from the first arrival of tea to Britain, over the colonial period to the present day. If youโ€™ve ever wondered how and why tea became so quintessentially British, this series will serve as a great explainer.m [Duration: each episode is about an hour long.]


The host, Melvyn Bragg, discusses history of tea with his guestsโ€”a panel of historians. It’s similar in content to the previous podcast (only in the single-episode format), and with greater focus on the economic and trade aspects of tea. [Duration: 42 min.]
