Autumn listening tips

In this post I’d like to recommend several podcast episodes that I’ve recently enjoyed listening to, all on the topic of autumn. Some of them are related to culture and literature, others to the natural world. I’m sure you’ll be able to find something that will appeal to you and give you some inspiration for further listening and exploration.

Want true crime without all the grisly details? Try a ‘cozy mystery’

I love to read classic ghost and horror stories during autumn, but another popular genre that seems just perfect for the season are the “cozies”. What’s a cozy, you might wonder. Briefly, cozies are murder mysteries typically set in idyllic, small-town locales, featuring young female protagonists. While there’s a murder, there are no graphic, gruesome descriptions. Intrigued? Listen to this short explainer from the NPR’s Books programme. [Duration: 3 min.]

Midnight Radio

Speaking of cozies, this drama series might easily qualify. “Drawing inspiration from 1950s radio serials and ghost stories, Midnight Radio is a new limited-run audio drama which follows two women finding love through an unlikely correspondence about community, leaving your small hometown, our relationship to the past, what it means to be haunted, and what we leave behind when we die.” The series gives off a very autumnal vibe, and I can warmly recommend it!

While autumn happens to be my favourite time of year, for many people it’s quite a nightmare as it can trigger a condition known as SAD – seasonal affective disorder. Listen to this episode of NPR’s Life Kit to help you recognise the symptoms and get tips on how to deal with the autumn blues. [Duration: 19 min.]

Climate change might make autumn leaves appear โ€” and disappear โ€” earlier

This 8-minute feature from the CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks programme briefly explains the effects of climate change on how trees process photosynthesis. Do you expect trees to lose leaves earlier or later in the year? There seem to be some unexpected changes! [Duration: 8 min.] Want more on the topic? Check out NPR’s When Autumn Leaves Start To Fall.
